How to Have Smoother, Younger, Fresher-Looking Skin at Any Age
Have you ever wondered how Hollywood's red carpet set seem to always have fabulous, luminous skin? Their skins have a dewy translucence that's just so attractive.
You didn't really think they looked that good naturally, did you?
Here we reveal how you too can have a complexion that's good enough for the red carpet.
But first, let’s find out if your skin needs help by taking this simple quiz.
Skin Condition Quiz
How did you do?
If you're like most people, your skin most likely needs help.
You probably know this already, and I bet you’ve tried beauty salon facials, as well as the so-called “miracle” skin creams and moisturisers - with little or no results?
You can stop wasting your money on those facials that may give you a nice pampering experience, but little in the way of the results you really want. The same goes for those expensive lotions and potions, because the reality is nothing is going to penetrate the mantle of dead, dull skin on your face.
The problem is, as we get older our skin’s healthy shedding process slows down. This causes our skins' to appear dull, congested and dry with fine lines and wrinkles.
Your skin is smothering under a layer of its own debris!
If you think of skin treatments in terms of building blocks, this is your Level 1 treatment.
So for Level 1 we need to gently remove this dead, dull layer. Medical Microdermabrasion is the treatment of choice to achieve this. It’s a highly effective, painless and relatively inexpensive way to return your skin to its youthful, radiant former glory. We refer to this as our Luminous Glow treatment.
Often when there's quite a build-up on your skin, this treatment is combined with a Level 2 treatment. Radiance Booster is a Glycolic Peeling treatment to help achieve an even deeper exfoliation.
How does Medical Microdermabrasion work?
Microdermabrasion gently removes the top dull, dead layers of the skin by ‘blasting’ them off with tiny crystals. Don’t worry, this doesn’t hurt. The skin being removed is dead. Your skin is essentially being resurfaced, allowing the new smoother, glowing, vibrantly alive layers beneath to emerge. The result is a more glowing, healthier, younger looking skin with fewer imperfections and smaller looking pores.
Once your skin has been cleared of these dead layers, you'll find your moisturiser will work much better, as it can now penetrate properly into the skin.
Once level 1 and level 2 have been completed, the dead, dull layers have been cleared.
Only then will we move to Level 3 - the IPL Photofacial (sometimes called a Fotofacial). This is our answer to thread veins, sun damage and pigmentation. The PhotoFacial will also stimulate the skin’s own collagen production, so reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

How does a Photofacial work?
The special wavelength of light is beamed onto the skin where it can penetrate to the root of the problem skin, targeting pigmentation and small superficial blood vessels. This treatment works especially well if you suffer with a diffuse redness (high colouring). See Facial Thread Veins Treatment for more on this. This deep penetration of the light also stimulates collagen production in your skin. What you'll end up with is a much more even skin colour and texture. This treatment is so effective we call it our Hollywood Complexion Photofacial.
Are these treatments just for the face?
No. We often use these technologies to treat the neck, chest and hands if there’s any problem pigmentation, sun damage, acne or broken capillaries present. How many of each treatment will I need?
It depends on the condition of your skin. Most people need 3 of each treatment, spaced over a couple of months. Some people will only need one.Is follow up necessary?
Once your skin has been sorted out, you may need the occasional follow-up, especially if you have fragile skin. Your aesthetic therapist will tell you how you should care for your skin to lessen the need for further treatment. What can I expect to see after my treatments?
Your face may be mildly red for several hours after the Photofacial procedure, but this will subside. Pigmented areas on your skin will become darker initially, and then flake off over the following week. This is normal. Sometimes as this healing beneath the skin is occurring your skin may feel a little itchy. Is there downtime?
Not really. You should be able get back to your life immediately. You’ll need to avoid the sun as much as possible before and after the Photofacial, and it won’t be possible for you to have the treatment if you have a tan. You should use a moisturiser with added sunscreen daily, at all times of the year.Is it possible to have the Photofacial without having had medical microdermabrasion first?
Again, that depends on the condition of your skin. Most aesthetic therapists prefer to see you get the desired result with the medical microdermabrasion before moving on to the Photofacial. Normally when your skin is congested, medical microdermabrasion is needed first to thoroughly exfoliate the top layers of the skin. This will improve the results of the Photofacial as the light will be able to penetrate much more efficiently. How do you choose a clinic for your advanced skincare?
1. Find out if the clinic uses medical grade equipment. Usually this is only found in dedicated aesthetic clinics where there is a doctor on the premises at all times. Beauty salons mainly use much lower powered equipment. Because of their lower power, these can be quite ineffective. This is probably a good thing, as in the wrong, untrained hands there’s a potential to cause a lot of damage.Medical microdermabrasion and photofacial equipment should only be used by specially trained personnel under the supervision of a medical doctor.
2. Book a (hopefully free) assessment appointment to check out your clinic of choice.
Ask the aesthetic therapist about their training. A good aesthetic therapist will have received advanced training in the anatomy and physiology of the skin. They are trained to recognise if there’s something ‘not quite right’ on the skin, and they will promptly refer you on for a medical opinion, or further investigation if they feel this is necessary.
Usually they’ll have undertaken extensive training in all aspects of skin rejuvenation therapies and technologies. At your assessment your aesthetic therapist should take the time to answer all of your questions and concerns regarding your skin. You should get a careful, personalised diagnosis of your unique skin characteristics and an honest, realistic assessment of your skin rejuvenation goals.
A good aesthetic therapist is worth their weight in gold with all the skin saving information you’ll get from them. When you find a good one, make sure you hold on to them forever – you’ll want them to be your new best friend!
