Choosing Your Surgeon
Often when money is tight there can be a temptation to choose your surgeon based on price. That could be the biggest, and in the long-term, most expensive mistake you could make.
Take a look at the following 8 points and consider each one before choosing your surgeon.1. When choosing a surgeon for your procedure, look for someone who is qualified firstly as a Plastic Surgeon. The worrying thing about the lack of regulation in Ireland is there are a lot of clinics offering 'cosmetic' surgery out there from 'cosmetic doctors' and 'cosmetic physicians'.
If the surgeon doesn't have the initials FCPS(Plast) or FRCS(Plast) after his name, he's not a plastic surgeon.
2. The surgeon should also have been certified by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and completed a combination of at least two years of general surgery with a minimum of six years of plastic surgery training to become a plastic surgeon.
To become a TRUE Cosmetic Surgeon, the Plastic surgeon needs to put in another 5 years of further training. To our knowledge Mr Munir Alam is the only certified Specialist Cosmetic Surgeon in Ireland].
3. Operate only within medical facilities
4. Adhere to a strict code of ethics. You need to know that if the procedure is not suitable for you, the surgeon won't treat you - no matter how much you may want it.
5. The surgeon needs to be resident within a few miles of the clinic so they are always available for any queries you may have - both pre and post procedure. Beware of clinics where the surgeon is resident outside of the country and flies home after your procedure.
6. Ask your plastic surgeon to see his portfolio of before and after pictures for the procedure you're interested in.
The more successful procedures he has done, the better for you.
This can be the most crucial point - I have seen the most eminently qualified surgeons who do mediocre (I'm being kind here) work.
7. Then choose a surgeon who you have a comfortable chemistry with. Someone who listens to your concerns and is easy to talk to.
8. There should be absolutely no obligation and no pressure put on you, take as long as you need to make up your mind.
The bottom line is - when you're going to invest in a procedure that'll make you look and feel better about yourself, you need to invest a little time in finding the right plastic surgeon for you.
I hope this has shed some light on what you need to look for if you are considering having a cosmetic procedure. If you have any questions on any of this, please contact me at

Comment from Sue
Recently we have had an upsurge in queries from people who have had cosmetic surgeries done abroad, and frankly I'm concerned.
From what I can see most people seem to be fine when they return to Ireland, but for those who end up with problems, their surgeon is thousands of miles away. So what happens is they call us, or other plastic surgeons in Ireland to put them right.
I need to be clear on this with you guys -
we are NOT in the business of putting bad surgeries right!
For your own safety and peace of mind, think very carefully about the final result you are looking for.
It may seem attractive to save yourself a few €€€ by going abroad, but think of the risks you are running.
With any surgery there can be complications; that just goes with the territory. Hoping it won't happen to you is like gambling with a loaded gun. You really need to think this through.
It's important to realise that you've got great options now here in Ireland, there's no real need to go abroad. A huge bulk of the cost used to be the cost of general anaesthesia and your stay in hospital after your procedure. With the older types of plastic surgery practices here in Ireland and abroad you'll still have to endure these.
What most people don't know is - in the hands of a plastic and cosmetic surgeon specially trained in advanced techniques there are certain cosmetic procedures that no longer require general anaesthesia and a stay in a hospital afterwards.
These advanced procedures include liposuction, eye bag removal, male breast removal, underarm sweating, buttock lifting, prominent ear correction, and certain advanced face lifting procedures. You only need light sedation with these procedures and you get to go home afterwards.
So let's have a look at what you get here:-
• A result that's the same or better than the older procedures
• Very little down-time
• The cost savings are passed on to you
• Reduced risks to you from complications associated with general anaesthesia
• No overnight stay in a hospital, so no risk of exposure to the hospital super bugs.
• The peace of mind of having a cosmetic surgeon who lives in Dublin and is always on call should you have any problems or questions
I know cost can be an issue, especially in this economy. So here’s what I’m going to do.
I'm going to give you a gift.
Email meand I’ll send you a Special Consultation Certificate for an assessment with Mr. Alam so you can find out more.
A consultation usually costs €80, but when you present your Special Consultation Certificate at the desk when you're having your consultation, you WON'T be charged.
Mr. Alam will take the time to personally answer all your questions and concerns.
He will give you a careful, personalised diagnosis of your unique needs and an honest, realistic assessment of your cosmetic goals. There will be no obligation and absolutely no pressure.
